Served in India as Under Secretary to the Bengal Government, 1905;  Registrar of the Appellate side, High Court, 1905 ; Deputy Secretary to the Government of India, legislative Department, 1910; Secretary to Government. 1915 ; appointed President of the Council of State in 1921 and in 1924 as member of the Governor-General’s  Council in charge of the Home Department ; appointed Governor of U.P. in 1928.            

Died on 17^th July, 1928, at Naini Tal.
